Swordfish-fishing
A very clear sky, the smell of salt water
I gathered up the gear and hopped on the train
A twisty harbor, a shining mast
I climbed the rolled-up casting net and looked around
At the pier I met the bearded captain
He whistled “pyuu” and smiled, “get on!"
“I am the king of the sea, the ruler of all the fishes
No monster can escape this harpoon!”
Can he catch it? Can he catch it?
Scary but fun, swordfish-fishing
The pure white hull, its name is thunderhead-cloud
A mountain of huge waves, rushing at 50 knots
“Oh nos,” said the bearded captain,
“I forgot my lunch, and we can’t go back to the harbor to get it”
In the great ocean, a fluttering border
“How would you like a specially-made sandwich?"
Chomping on a tuna sandwich, the king of the sea said,
“I never knew such a tasty thing existed in the world”
Can he catch it? Can he catch it?
Scary but fun, swordfish-fishing
For three or four hours, holding onto the pole
Sunscreen is flowing away with the sweat
With a telescope set up, the bearded king
Stared sternly starboard
Before sunset, the pole made a noise
The shriek of the reel, the bracing deck-shoes
A thick palm holds me steady
There in the red sea, a jumping swordfish
(Interlude ~ the battle with the swordfish is enacted with various noises)
After all of it, we came back to the harbor
Three days later, the captain and I had a wedding
Did I catch him? Or was I caught by him?
I am still not sure which
The captain’s beard was actually a fake
Even though he’s the king, he didn’t know how to swim
If I were to drown in the ocean
Would he jump in for me?
